SYNTAGMA
Below the parliament with its evzones and countless pigeons, this large, central square built mostly from marble, is often the starting point for the political developments of the country. Three perpendicular roads opposite, Mitropoleos, Ermou and Karageorgi Servia, take you down towards the Monastiraki area and into the historically old neighborhood of Plaka.
Ermou is the oldest and most commercial street of Athens and is full of shops, mostly clothing stores and you get a great selection, from distinguished lingerie shops to window displays full of silk scarves, to multinational, big brand names like Zara and H&M.
On the side streets, spreading out like a spider’s web, the multi-ethnic, culinary heart of the capital beats away. It’s all concentrated here. From Japanese sushi and Indian tandoori, to Chinese and Middle Eastern street-food, to Greek souvlaki wraps in pita, to modern cafés and savvy wine bars and ultra-trendy cocktail bars with colorful crowds that stay up late at night to good music and unadulterated drinks.
