“A journey to Eleusis, the birth-place of Eleusinian Mysteries”

Eleusina (Eleusis) is world famous for the Eleusinian Mysteries as well as the birthplace of Aeschylus, one of the three great tragedians of antiquity. It used to be one of the five holy cities of Greece with the famous Eleusinian Mysteries –which were linked to the myth of Demeter and her daughter Persephone- attracting pilgrims from all over the then-known world.

Who was the founder of the Eleusinian mysteries? How and when did the Small and the Great mysteries used to be celebrated? Who were the “Mystai”? What kind of plant used to grow up in the area and what is the association between the symbolism of poppies and pomegranates with the worship of goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone?

Our guided tour in the Archaeological Site of Eleusis highlights many aspects of the city and of the mysteries that were held in the name of the goddess Demeter and Persephone.
